ECA was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Cussen, who served as ECA President from 1999 to 2000.
Alan was a well-respected figure in the electrical industry, known for his dedication to promoting safety and standards.
Alan enjoyed a long successful career which began with an electrical apprenticeship in Histon, Cambridge. He then undertook several electrician and supervisor roles with several contracting firms across the country, eventually becoming National Managing Director for Balfour Kilpatrick and delivering projects including Queens Medical Centre and Ratcliffe Power Station. Alan spent his later career as Managing Director of WT Parker.
During his tenure as ECA President, Alan worked tirelessly to advocate for the interests of electrical contractors and to improve the quality of electrical work in the UK. Alan’s involvement with the ECA began in the early 1990s, and he served on the association's board of directors for several years before being elected President in 1999. During his tenure as President, Alan was instrumental in promoting best practices and advancing the interests of electrical contractors throughout the UK.
Alan’s son Paul Cussen said, “Alan was a gentleman with a work ethic second to none, who immersed himself in his work. He was a lifelong advocate of trade organisations.”
In addition to his work with ECA, Alan was also active in several other industry organisations, including the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry (JIB), where he served on the National Board.
Alan will be remembered by his colleagues and peers as a true leader in the construction sector. His dedication to the industry and his commitment to excellence will continue to inspire future generations for years to come.
Paul added, “Alan loved his career as well as the colleagues and friends he made along the way, and he went over and above his normal 9 to 5 to work extensively to improving conditions within the industry by his involvement with Organisations such as the JIB and ECA.”
Alan will be deeply missed by his friends and colleagues in the electrical contracting industry. ECA’s staff wish their sincere condolences to Alan’s family at this difficult time.
