The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) is the sole ID and competence card scheme for electrotechnical operatives in the UK and is recognised and endorsed by the industry. It is also a member of the CSCS Alliance. ECA staff operate the ECS contact centre under the terms of a Service Level Agreement with the scheme’s owners, the electrotechnical JIB.
ECS is often a requirement for construction sites but is also recognised by many public and private sector clients such as councils, NHS trusts, universities, government departments, internet service providers, house builders and social housing organisations. In 2018, Dame Judith Hackitt identified ECS as an example of competence good practice in her seminal report, Building a Safer Future (at p.78).
Qualifying for an ECS card
To apply successfully for an ECS card, applicants must provide evidence of recognised and relevant qualifications and (unless exempt) pass the ECS Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Assessment test. Experienced Worker Assessment offers an opportunity for individuals with the right knowledge, skills and experience to obtain an ECS Gold Card outside of an apprenticeship.
You can visit the ECS website for:
- General ECS information, including card types, eligibility requirements, contacts, etc.
- Specific information about taking the ECS HS&E assessment online or in person.
ECS discounts for ECA Members
ECA Members with 10 operatives or more can receive a discount on HS&E assessments with in-house invigilation. ECA Members who take up the option of FREE JIB membership are also entitled to a discount on card costs.
See below for more information about these and other benefits of ECA Membership.
