Industry and schools 'should work together'

Stronger links are needed between schools and industry, according to one expert.

Speaking to the Times, Alan Cook, the chief executive of manufacturing firm Cobham, claimed that a lack of understanding between the two sectors could mean that some children are not fully aware of the opportunities on offer to them.

Mr Cook, a former electrician's apprentice, is now championing such courses himself.

He said: "Apprenticeships are really going through a resurgence and that is starting to make a big difference for companies like ours."

The skills which can be developed through apprenticeships will be vital to ensuring the future of the UK economy, Mr Cook added.

Last week, Sir Alan Sugar told the Sunderland Echo that apprenticeships are the best investment a company can make.

He explained that this is because they allow a company to train people from scratch, moulding them into vital members of the team, complete with all the required skills.ADNFCR-781-ID-19230382-ADNFCR
